This project, led by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universitaet Hannover (Germany), has as starting point the thesis that the perception of Europe has a high impact on expectations and decisions of citizens from outside Europe to migrate to EU member countries. Misperceptions and targeted misinformation campaigns can lead to security threats. Thus, the aim of MIRROR is to develop an integrated platform, a set of tools, as well as a systematic methodology for the comprehensive intermedia analysis of the perception of Europe by migrants, the detection of discrepancies between perception of and reality in Europe, and the creation of awareness for the impact of such misconceptions and resulting threats.
The project is carried out by a multidisciplinary Consortium of 13 organisations from 9 countries. K&I is specially engaged in the project activities aimed at studying some societal issues related to migrations and the factors influencing the societal acceptance of the MIRROR solutions.

MIRROR organised, as the project’s final event, a hybrid workshop on “Security Challenges and Opportunities in the Use of Open-Source Information and Emerging Technologies in the Field of Migration“, held in Vienna on the 5 and 6 of May, 2022, at the Austrian National Defence Academy (LVAk). Under the MIRROR project, a project conference took place in online-offline hybrid mode on the 15-16th of December in Valetta, Malta, titled “Migration in Focus: Addressing Informational Challenges in Humanitarian Actions“. The conference was attended by representatives from academia, policymaking, civil society and international organisations working in the field of migration. At the end of November 2021, the MIRROR Social Frame was completed by K&I and delivered to the European Commission. The report, drafted by Luciano d’Andrea, Daniele Mezzana, and Federico Marta, explores the perceptions and misperceptions of people and stakeholders regarding the key social issues pertaining to migration addressed by the MIRROR system. The Report on factors that can influence the social acceptance of the MIRROR system (D3.4) was delivered to the European Commission at the end of May 2021.
